MODENA, AMORE MIO…

The birthplace of Giuseppe Verdi, Federico Fellini, Luciano Pavarotti, Giorgio Armani and Enzo Ferrari, the music, cinema, fashion and high speed geniuses, the Italian region of Emilia Romagna has in fact many more merits to boast. Italy’s sixth largest region is divided into two parts: Romagna with its towns of Ravenna, Forli, Cesena, Faenza, and Rimini that lies to the East of Bologna; and Emilia, with Parma, Regio, and the unrivaled Modena.
Modena’s stone paved streets will not readily reveal the epoch that marked them with its eternal traces. Ignorant travelers, unaware of the town’s history, are bound to be torn by doubts when coming out from the dark Medieval blocks to see either the brightly sun lit Baroque squares or the Duce avenues. Meanwhile, the clue to Modena’s identity lies somewhere between Piazza Grande, the town’s main square, and the broad Corso Duomo that leads to the cathedral. One glance at the cathedral’s belfry, and you will recognize Modena as the capital of Romanesque architecture.

LAND OF RENAISSANCE
It took Tuscany quite a while to earn the reputation of a truly respected wine region and almost no time to turn from respected to one of the most popular. Tuscany owes worldwide recognition to its great vintages. The astonishing success was acknowledged by enologists, wine connoisseurs and wine tasters alike. Although the Tuscan wine renaissance is always attributed to the late 1970s and early 1980s, it is considered merely a basis for the emergence of the New Tuscany of the mid 1990s.
FOOD FOR THOUGHT AND BODY
Olives’ world tour started in the East. There, the olive tree was regarded as a symbol of welfare, glory and peace. The winners of friendly competitions and fierce wars were awarded olive wreaths. Olive branches were even found in Tutankhamen’s tomb. The ancient Egyptians believed it was the goddess Isis who taught people to grow and use olives. The beautiful Cleopatra is known to have been drinking a spoonful of olive oil every morning to preserve beauty and vital force. Phoenician merchants brought the exotic fruit from Egypt and Asia Minor to Greece where the tree was also endowed with divine nature. According to a Greek legend, Athena, the Goddess of wisdom, won a contest among Gods for the most useful gift for humankind. Athena presented people with an olive tree. In ancient Greece known for the cult of body, athletes proudly rubbed the «liquid gold» all over their bodies to look irresistible.
PARISIAN WONDERLAND
France is the country of not only noble wines but of gourmet chocolate too. La Maison du Chocolat is certainly the best starting point on your luxurious chocolate tour. La Maison’s creator, Robert Linxe, whose motto is «expertise, new technologies, and good taste», brought his chocolate savoir-faire up to the state-of-the-art technology. Born in Bayonne, Robert Linxe went to Switzerland for a chocolatier apprenticeship, and later worked in Parisian restaurants. At the age of 25, the chocolate connoisseur was employed with La Marquise de Presles specializing in pastry and confectionary. The clients would often ask him to «invent» a chocolate for them, and Robert Linxe would do it with pleasure. In the rainy November of 1977, he opened the first Maison du Chocolat in the rue du Faubourg Saint-Honore in Paris.
THE AUTUMH OF THE PATRIARCH

Gabriel Garcia Markes came back to the clinic ten years later when there were no traces of the malignant growth left.
«I was in love», the master confessed, «I’ve been in love all that time. Actually, I’ve never stopped falling in love».

NAUGHTY VIRGIN MANAGER

Every time he goes into a new business, it is not just to make money. It is to make a difference. For our hero business is an adventure. «Virgin» — curiously enough, that was the «chaste» name he thought up for the group of his businesses.
He is still dreaming of crossing the Atlantic by boat and hopes to circumnavigate the globe by balloon. He enjoys taking risks, both in business and everyday life. He indulges the queer turns of his ambition and makes most his dreams come true. 1950 is the year of birth, 150 is the number of his business ventures united under the same brand, his net worth is three billion US dollars.

POLLOCK’S BRAVE ART

On a stormy night of 1952, Jackson Pollock started his new opus. He spread a canvas on the floor of his windswept barn and poured paint on it. Then he took another can, of a different colour. With a stick he was carving the thickening mass into an intricate scribble. Pollock’s quasi-primitivist technique was hotly disputed in the art world: is he a genius or a parvenu making fun of artistic tradition? Well, it is to a large degree to this endless controversy that Jackson Pollock owes his fame.
